A polished raw amber specimen — the fossil resin the accord borrows its name from, not an ingredient in it

What perfumery calls “amber” is not a reference to fossilized tree resin — ambergris and amber are two entirely different materials with an unfortunately overlapping vocabulary — but a built accord, usually labdanum and benzoin with vanilla and/or tonka layered over it, meant to evoke warmth and resinous depth rather than any single raw material. Marcel Verdier’s 1978 formula is unusually resin-forward even within the ambré family: most contemporary ambers of that decade led with vanilla and used the resins as support, and this one inverts that balance.

Bottled only as extrait — Marcel’s notes in the ledger are explicit that he considered anything more diluted a different, lesser composition, not simply a weaker version of the same one.
